To analyse a fixation point, we took photographs of ocular fundus using the non-mydriasis fundus camera with a built-in target.<br>The 120 normal subjects examined had Landolt visual acuity of 1.0 or more, no manifest strabismus, and binocularity of 40 arc seconds. We took photographs of fixation point using the non-mydriasis fundus camera with a built-in target (UCHIDA & TOPCON). The fixation target was a concentric and non-crossed one. The size of the target was 10.62° in visual angle with a central black circle of 1°. We analysed the distance between foveal reflex and fixation point, using an objective method of the “image diagnosis”. Furthermore, we examined several kinds of visual functions.<br>Two hundred and nine of the 240 eyes (87%) had foveal fixation, while the other 31 eyes (13%) did not. Twenty-nine eyes had nasal disparity from the fovea with a mean angle of 0.6°, while 2 eyes had temporal disparity with a mean angle of 0.7°, 24 eyes had superior disparity with a mean angle of 0.5°, and 3 eyes had inferior disparity with a mean angle of 0.5°. Combination of nasal and superior disparity was encountered in 23 eyes of the 31 which did not have foveal fixation. A disparity within 1° was observed in 29 of the 31 eyes. No difference was proved in visual function between the cases with a reflex of foveal fixation and those without.<br>These disparities suggest the following assumptions; a disparity between the foveal reflex and anatomical fovea caused by the clivus slope inequality; and non-uniform cone cell density in the fovea occurring in the growth process.
