Scientific detailed research has been done for the constructions of indicating instruments. Electrical instmment makers have been aware since early days that an important problem to decide the quality of instrument lies in the relation between the torque and weight of the moving system of instrument. An attempt has been made to express this relation in the simple ratio of the torque to the weight. Using this ratio as a criterion, the makers drew the comparisons not only between their own instruments, but also hetween their own instruments and other makers' instruments. Difficulty was soon found, however, in using this ratio T/W because it is impossible to lay the proper emphasis on the weight. So, Messrs. Goss and Stott once suggested that this ratio should be T/Wn and n=1.5 or n=4/3 has to be adopted for vertical shaft. They also pronounced that n=1 should be adopted for horizontal shaft. These values have been taken for a long time. According to the writer's long experience, however, the effect of the moving system's weight of horizontal shaft has to be larger than l, i.e., n>1. Finally, he proved that n=1.5 is most suitable according to his scientific study and experience, It is also desoribed that from his long experience, the mechanical merits of W.H.M. should adopt the frictional torque(Fr) of resistor in such equation as G=T/hW4/3+Fr.
