The mechanism of relaxation of the intermolecular cohesive energy of silk was made clear concerning mainly the swelling phenomena and the temperature dependency of thermodynamic quantities relating to the diffusion process of the solvents from the stand point of the interaction between silk and organic solvents with three dimensional solubility parameters (δ) on the basis of polarity, affinity between silk and organic solvents. Results obtained are as follows. The dilute heat of organic solvents (κ1) closely related to the degree of the volume swelling of silk (Qv) or the logarithm of diffusion coefficient (log D). The value of (Qv) increased with decreasing κ1 and the solvents possessing δ value near to silk's δ one showed strong swelling power. The value of D increased with decreasing ε1. The polarity components expressed by the sum of hydrogen bonding δh and polar one δp related predominantly to the swelling of sillk.
