The elongation-shrikage behavior of silk in organic solvents is not as simple as that of synthetic fibers which merely show shrinkage. In its behavior, silk shows the characteristics of heteropolar high polymers. The temperature dependence of the elongation-shrinkage behavior of silk in organic solvents was divided into three (A, B, C, ) types.<br>Type A is characterized by only elongation (Methanol, Buthanol), Type B is characterized by a moderate elongation at low temperatures, but shrinkage at high temperatures and the majority of the solvents in this type in general induce shrinkage (Benzen, Propanol, Dioxane). Type C ranges from shrinkage to elongation. The elongation-shrinkage behavior depended on the rapidity of the penetration of the solvent and the degree of relaxation of inter-molecular chains by the solvent.
