抄録

Silk fibers were immersed in organic solvents and measured for changes in density, internal surface area and L. O. distribution (distribution curves of intermolecular cohesive energy in the amorphous region of fibroin fiber) to investigate the molecular basis of aggregation occurring in the fibroin fibers treated with organic solvents. The aggregated structures were found to be stable since the L. O. distribution of the treated fibers did not return to the original state even after immersion in water. Organic solvents seem to cause a relaxation in the molecular structure at the amorphous region of fibers, forming micro voids and enlarging the internal surface areas. Moreover, the L. O. values were elevated at the highly or moderately humid regions, indicating that the aggregated structures have a large number of hydrogen bonds which are susceptible to high humidity. The occurrence of such aggregated states might be utilized for the improvement of dyeing properties of silk fibers by treatment with organic solvents.
