Cellulose acetate membranes were modified with biotin to identify avidin. The follawing techniques were used to attach biotin to the surface of cellulose membranes. 1) Cellulose-chitosan composite cross-linked by glutaraldehyde, 2) Surface modification with polynuclear carboxylate metal complex formation, and 3) Surface modification with glycidylmethacrylate. Avidin identification was performed with these membranes. Every biotinylate membrane formed the complex with avidin on the surface, which resulted in membrane potential change. The extent of membrane potential change across cellulose membranes markedly depended on the charge density of the membrane matrix and on the charge change due to biotin-avidin complex formation.
