• ON THE INHIBITORY ACTION OF HOMOSULFAMIN ON THE LYSIS (OR PHAGE-LIBERATION) OF PHAGEINFECTED ESCHERICHIA COLI

抄録

When homosulfamin is added to the broth media inoculated with Eschericha coli, after, before, and at the same time phage infection to the host cell, the lysis of the phageinfected Escherichia coli is inhibited or delayed in proportion to the concentration of the drug. The influences of the drug upon the growth rate of test organisms, strain F6, is investigated here.
We adopted both the photoelectro-nephelometrical and plating techniques in order to observe these inhibitory actions on the phage-host cell relationship.
1) When the final concentration of homosulfamin added to the nutrient broth media is 0.6 per cent, the growth of the inoculated Escherichia coli is inhibited by stopping the cell division, but it does not sterilize the culture. But 1.2 per cent of the drug can kill the bacterial cell in the broth media.
2) 0.6 per cent solution of the drug does not inactivate the coliphage, T6 strain, and it does not inhibit the adsorption rate of the virus to the host cell, but it lengthens the lysis time when it is added with phage inoculation. This prolonging of the lysis time is proportional to the concentration of the drug in the range of less than 0.6 percent.
3) When phage-infected host cells exposed to the drug, with concentration less than 0.6 per cent, only first several minutes of the latent period of time they begin lysis as usually without any delay.
4) When the drug was added several minutes before the inoculation of the phage, phage-infected host cells begin lysis as similarly as when it is added with phage particles.
5) When the drug is added after the phage inoculation, the delay of the lysis time is observed to become greater in proportion to the interval between these two additions.
