抄録

1. The author conducted a study on the claustrum with the brains of human adults and human embryos of the earlier and the later stages of the 3rd month and of the 4th month as materials.
2. The claustrum in appearance forms a solid plate, but in reality consists of numerous particles of grey matter arranged cribriform.
3. The claustrum does not throw out cuneiform prominence to fit in the gyri of the insular cortex, but the claustrum itself undulates in parallel with the gyri and the sulci of the cortex.
4. The ventral and the dorsal portions of the claustrum both bend laterally in parallel with the gyri of the operculum at their ends.
5. The claustrum is not entirely coextensive with the insular cortex, extending more or less beyond the latter except at the caudal end.
6. Many connections and fusions are found between the claustrum and the insular cortex.
7. In the stage of early embryonic development, the claustrum is formed contained in the cerebral cortex and later on is separated from the cortex by the development of the capsula extrema.
8. Some particles of grey matter are found in the capsula externa, lightly in connection with the claustrum.
9. From the above, it is concluded that the claustrum originates in the insular cortex, shows independent development of its own subsequent to its separation from the insular cortex and should be regarded as one of the cerebral nuclei.
