The ideal contrast media for sialography are those which are innocuous and provide an excellent visualization of the salivary gland. Although we commonly use sodium & meglumine amidotrizoate 76%, it sometimes causes pain during the injection and discomfort after sialography. It is likely that the high viscosity of the contrast medium may cause pain and discomfort. Therefore, we compared the two contrast media of different viscosity, sodium iothalamate 66.8% and sodium & meglumine amidotrizoate 76%. Sodium iothalamate has the same iodine content as and a half viscosity of the counterpart.
The study was carried out in 20 normal subjects who were free of demonstrable parotid gland disease, 19 being males and 1 female, and the ages ranging from 22 to 53 years (average 30.2 years).
Results obtained include:
1) Lesser volume of sodium iothalamate 66.8% caused pain during injection (p<0.01)
2) There was no correlation between the pain during the injection and the level of the viscosity.
3) Both of the contrast media caused pain at the equivalent stage of sialography, when the contrast medium demonstrated the main duct and almost branches.
4) There was no difference between the groups in the optical evaluation of sialograms. This may be due to the same iodine content of the contrast media.
