抄録

The cytological study was performed on 9 cases of primary vaginal carcinoma including 3 cases of CIS, and the following results were obtained.<BR>1) The background of the smear was clean in all 3 cases of CIS. Tumor diatheses were observed in 4 cases out of 6 cases of invasive vaginal carcinoma. Therefore, tumor diatheses might be useful to differentiate invasive carcinoma of the vagina from CIS.<BR>2) Parabasal type malignant cells were predominant in the smears of undifferentiated CIS and poorly differented invasive squamous cell carcinoma.<BR>3) The cytologic pattern of differentiated CIS was full of variety, because of coexitence of parabasal to superficial type malignant cells in the same smear, although the number was small. Some of the intermediate type malignant cells had large nuclei or multiple nuclei characteristically.<BR>4) The cytologic pattern of well differentiated invasive squamous cell carcinoma was similar to that of differentiated CIS. However, superficial type atypical cells which appeared less atypical were also abserved characteristically. We should not underestimate those cells as derived from dysplasia.
