Silk fibers from the Japanese oak silkworm, Antheraea yamamai, the Chinese tussah silkworm, Antheraea pernyi, and the commercial mulberry silkworm, Bombyx mori, were fibrillated using a ball mill. The morphology and the structure for the fibrils obtained through the fibrillation were investigated by a transmission electron microscopy, TEM, and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy, FTIR, coupled to a diamond attenuated total internal reflectance accessory, ATR. From the TEM observation, not only the ribbon-like fibrils but also the net-like ones were observed for the fibrils from wild silks. Such fibrils, however, were not observed for the fibrils from mulberry silks. The electron diffraction measurement for these fibrils showed an amorphous scattering pattern. However, little difference was observed between the diamond-ATR-FTIR spectra for these fibrils and the control silk fibers. It seems that the lateral packing for the pleated βsheet structure of fibroin in silk is loosened slightly when the fibrillation proceeds to a certain degree.
