Sharpey's fibers in the human cementum associated with occlusion and age were observed by transmission electron microscopy and processed for morphometric analysis in the mid-root cementum area.Eighty permanent teeth were used in the study. Both teeth that had opposing occlusion and those without opposing occlusion were used. The results were as follows.1.In association with occlusion, (1) Sharpey's fibers of teeth with opposing occlusion showed an oblique orientation to the cementum surface and the cemento-dentinal junction with regular arrangement. (2) Sharpey's fibers of impacted teeth that did not have opposing occlusion showed parallel orientation to the cementum surface and the cemento-dentinal junction with irregular arrangement.Significant statistical differences of Sharpey's fibers width and content depended on the occlusal function. (3) Sharpey's fibers found in the cementum of teeth that had no opposing occlusion showed a thin and irregular arrangement in the superficial cementum layer. In the deep cementum layer, they showed an oblique orientation to the cemento-dentinal junction, and a thick and regular arrangement.Significant statistical differences in Sharpey's fibers width and content were found between superficial and deep cementum layers in those teeth without opposing occlusion.2.With respect to age, no significant statistical differences were shown in the the width and content of Sharpey's fibers between those teeth in humans under 30 years of age and those over 30 years of age.
