The location, size and dendritic architecture of motoneurons supplying the pharyngeal and laryngeal muscles which participate chiefly in the pharyngeal stage of swallowing, and the fiber typing of those muscles, were investigated morphologically in cats. The experiments were performed by a transaxonal tracer technique and immunohistochemistry. In the nucleus ambiguus, motoneurons for the stylopharyngeal, pharyngeal constrictor, cervical esophageal, levator palati and cricothyroid (CT) muscles were located in the rostral half of the nucleus, while those for the intrinsic laryngeal muscles except CT were found in the caudal half. Distribution of those motoneurons showed somatotopic arrangement and segmental supply.<BR>Two percent of the laryngeal motoneurons were large cells (50μm-) between medium and sman cells (-25μm), with the remainder evenly divided. Pharyngeal motoneurons were smaller than the former and most of them small in size. The pharyngeal constrictor dendrites extended mainly ventrally. Cervical esophageal dendrites did not extend in the transverse plane. Most pharyngeal motoneurons were connected tightly to each other with neuronal fibers. Dendron for CT and adductor motoneurons proceeded dorso-ventromedially and ventrolaterally, whereas those for the abductor motoneurons extended dorsomedially and ventrolaterally. The extent of dendritic tree for each muscle stretched to the intemeurons relating to pharyngolaryngeal functions. The distribution of muscle fiber typing in each muscle indicated suitable arrangement for the role of each muscle. The hyopharyngeus and thyropharyngeus revealed type II fibers with predominance. In contrast, the cricopharyngeus and cervical esophageal muscle were found to be predominantly type I fibers. About half of the CT and vocalis muscle fibers were type I, while more than half of the abductor and, particularly, the adductor muscles were type II fibers.
