Plasma renin activity (PRA) levels were measured during recumbency and upright posture by radioimmunoassay method in essential hypertension, hyperthyroidism and pheochromocytoma before and after administration of propranolol or phenoxybenzamine. The results were as follows: 1. In essential hypertension, the PRA decreased both in recmbent and upright posture after administration of propranolol. Patients administrated phenoxybenzamine were divided into two groups of A and B. In group A, the PRA was decreased with moderate reduction of blood pressure. In group B. the PRA was increased with remarkable reduction of blood pressure and increased heart rate. 2. In hyperthyroidism, the PRA was decreased both in recumbent and in upright posture after administration of propranolol or phenoxybenzamine. 3. In pheochromocytoma, the PRA was decreased more remarkably by the administration of propranolol and phenoxybenzamine than by the administration of propranolol alone. 4. It was suggested that the effect of propranolol was not mediated by urinary sodium excretion or the changes of blood volume but by the direct effect of propranolol on jaxtaglomerularcell apparatus. 5. The decrease of PRA after administration of phenoxybenzamine was suggested that the effect was mediated by the increased plasma volume. 6. The increase of PRA after administratfon of phenoxybenzamine was suggested that the effect was mediated by the sudden reducion of blood pressure or the stimulation of β-recepter. 7. The suppression of PRA after administration of propranolol was not followed by a decrease of blood pressure. These findings suggest that PRA in recumbent and upright posture was regulated by a and β-adrenergic receptors mechanism.
