The occurrences of mercury-volatilizing bacteria in mercury-polluted marineenvironment was examined, using various marine strains isolated from Minamata Bayand nearby low-level-mercury station (Control stations). Minimal inhibitory concentrations to mercury chloride, methylmecury chloride, ethylmercury chloride, thimerosal, fluorescein mercuric acetate, phenylmercuric acetate, andp-chlormercuribenzoatewere significantly higher for the strains from Minamata Bay than those fromcontrol stations. The occurrence of strains that can volatilize only mercury chloride(narrow-spectrum mercury volatilization) in Minamata Bay was not significantlyhigher than that in the control stations. However, the occurrence of strains that canvolatilize certain organomercurials (broad-spectrum mercury volatilization) inMinamata Bay was significantly higher than that in the control stations . Somestrains from Minamata Bay could volatilize every organomercurial examined in thisstudy, while no strains from the control stations could volatilize the same compounds. The mercury-volatilizing bacteria in mercury-polluted marine environment probablyplay an important role in the cycling of mercury through the natural environment .
