抄録

Since the new legislation concerning organ transplantation was enforced on October 7, 1997, 4 cases of organ donation from brain dead donors were reported. Totally, 3 hearts, 2 livers and 8 kidneys were transplanted successfully. Two hearts and 2 kidneys were transplanted in 3 national hospitals.<br>The first donation was performed at Kohchi Red Cross Hospital according to the new legislation and the new manual on the legal brain death. The hot competition among the stuffs of TV and newspaper to get the information of the case made the hospital difficult to perform the daily medical business for a long time.<br>The first time organ donation was finally accepted by the Japanese society by the effort of doctors of Kohchi Red Cross Hospital who believed firmly that they had done best to treat the donor patient and should have announced the every facts with their good faith to the society.<br>All transplant cases including heart, liver and kidney went successfully.
