Anomalies of the oval window and the facial nerve were studied on serial sections of the temporal bones from infants with congenital malformations. Materials consisted of 10 ears from 5 cases with chromosomal aberrations including trisomy D, E and G and bilateral ears from Potter's syndrome and fetal erythroblastosis. When focusing to abnormalities in the oval window and the facial nerve, they were conveniently classified into the following two groups depending upon the degree of malformations, that is, one with atresia of the oval window and the other with hypoplasia of the stapes and the annular ligament. Atresia of the oval window, observed in 6 ears, showed severe developmental anomalies of the middle ear including an abnormal course of the facial nerve and absence of the stapes. While, in the group with hypoplasia of the stapes and the annular ligament, observed 8 ears, the stapes was present and the course of the facial nerve was essentially normal with minor abnormalities such as an obtuse angle at the first genu, central migration of ganglion cells, ectopic muscles and a wide bony dehiscience of the facial canal around the oval window.
