A possible role for type II collagen autoimmunity in the etiology of otosclerosis and Meniere's disease was suggested recently. Using the monoclonal antibody to type II collagen, we studied type II collagen development in the ear of the guinea pig. In the cartilagenous part (Meckel's cartilage, Reichert's cartilage, cartilagenous plate in the auricle and external acoustic meatus, ossicles, eustachian tube cartilage and otic capsule), type II collagen development corresponded to cartilagenous development and resorption. In the non-cartilagenous part (tympanic membrane, tympanic annulus, basilar membrane, spiral limbus, spiral ligament, osseous spiral lamina, Rosenthal canal, maculae of utricle and sacule, semicircular canal membrane, crista ampullaris and endolymphatic duct), type II collagen appeared with the development of each structure. Type II collagen distributed widely in the ear after the early stage of the development.
