抄録

Physical characteristics and germination properties of seeds of some Amaranthus species were found to vary from species to species. Seed size was very small and the number of seeds per gram ranged from 1, 300 to 3, 700. Seeds with various colours such as yellow, brown, purple and black were observed.<BR>Germination properties studied in 4 species indicated that the fresh seeds (3 months after harvests) of some species (Amaranthus tricolor) displayed dormancy.<BR>Germination temperature was found to be 17°C or more, with the optimum temperature being around 23°C.<BR>Seed emergence was detected at a seeding depth up to 5 cm, but the growth of the root system after germination was better at a depth of 1-3 cm. As a result the growth and development were more satisfactory and the yield was higher.
