Abstract

Ninety-seven patients with chronic urticaria were examined using the Mausley Personality Inventory test. It was revealed that they belonged to a group, different from the group of normal individuals, as the general pattern. They were characterized by extroversion (more evident in males than in females), but there was no tendency toward neurosis. There was a tendency toward resentment, only in the females. If they were classified by physical factors, the group with the negative inhalation allergen test showed no extroversion, while the positive inhalation allergen test group showed a stronger tendency to neurosis. Among various diseases of psychic and psychosomatic origin, the group of chronic urticaria patients showed the same characteristics as those with organ neurosis and abnormal large intestine groups. These findings suggested the presence of psychological factors. It was related to assumed that chronic urticaria belongs to a group of diseases psychological factors; in these diseases both psychological and physical factors are involved. Chronic urticaria may relate to a personality disorder, viewed from the standpoint of psychosomatic medicine.
