In order to control the optical, magnetic or host-guest properties of molecules, the geometrical change in trans-cis isomerization of azobenzenes have been used to switch the properties. It has been known that the thermal and photochemical isomerization of azobenzene are affected by the steric hindrance such as cyclic structure or free volume. In azobenzenophanes, where two azobenzenes are linked cyclically by relatively short chains, thermal and photochemical isomerization are also influenced by the steric distortion. However, previous studies have been discussed the behaviour of molecules whose structure is not apparent. In this study, we synthesized the azobenzenophanes in which two, three and four azobenzenes are connected by methylene linkers at the mata position. X-ray crystal structure analyses revealed the all isomers of azobenzene dimer. In the trans, cis isomer, the cis-azobenzene unit was deformed due to the ring strain. The trans, trans isomer was slightly distorted, while the cis,cis isomer was not deformed. The relative stability of cis,cis and trans, cis isomers was deducible from the X-ray crystal structures. In azobenzene trimer and tetramer, a solvent molecule was incorporated into the molecular cavity in the solid state. Upon exposure to light, all molecules exhibited cis-trans isomerization.
