In recent years, anticancer drug treatment with traditional selective intra-arterial chemotherapy has attracted little attention. We report an advanced case of oral cancer successfully treated by traditional selective intra-arterial chemoradiotherapy with arterial redistribution technique. The patient, a 67-year-old man, complained of tongue pain and eating disorder on initial consultation. An inspection was conducted immediately, and right-sided tongue carcinoma (T4bN2bM0) was diagnosed. Angiography showed that tumor nutrient arteries, facial artery and lingual artery had a common trunk with angiectopia. We expected that insertion of a catheter into the tumor nutrient arteries would prove difficult, so traditional selective intra-arterial injection chemotherapy with arterial redistribution was planned. Intra-arterial chemotherapy was performed for 5 weeks using 5-fluorouracil (100-50 mg/m2/day; total, 8856 mg), docetaxel (15 mg/m2/week; total, 178.2 mg), and nedaplatin (20 mg/m2/week; total, 225.3 mg) combined with radiotherapy (total, 50 Gy). After the completion of treatment, the tumor mass and ulcer disappeared from the oral cavity. As of 18 months after treatment, follow-up has shown no recurrence or metastasis. This treatment was able to achieve an effect comparable to superselective intra-arterial chemoradiotherapy.
