<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Pure titanium foils were anodized in an aqueous electrolyte containing sodium tartrate dihydrate and hydrogen peroxide. The annealed anodic oxide mainly consisted of anatase TiO2 and showed high antibacterial activity under UV illumination. The amount of photocatalytically formed hydroxyl radicals correlated well with the antibacterial activity, which was enhanced by an increase in the annealing temperature.</jats:p>
