Chemical weapons are technologically simple weapons, which makes them suitalbe for mass production by less wealthy countries. Recent attacks with the nerve gas sarin, in Matsumoto City and Tokyo subway, remind us that the threat of chemical weapons is no longer merely on the battlefield, but there is a great possibility of facing such a threat anyplace in the world. Thus, it is essential for scientists, law enforcement personnel, and emergency medical personnel to understand the properties, toxic effects, symptoms, and treatment methods for these terrible agents. After the sarin attacks in Matsumoto and in the Tokyo subway, rescue efforts by police and medical personnel were severely hampered because they lacked specific knowledge, equipment such as gas masks, protective coats, and proper medicine, especially PAM and atropine. In this review article, the various poisonous gases are listed in a brief background. The second part of the article focuses on the toxic effect of poisonous gases, with special emphasis on nerve gases. The third part is a brief description of clinical symptoms associated with poisonous gases. The last part of the review deals with treatments.
