Abstract

We compared the efficacy, safety and acceptability of polyethylene glycol electrolyte lavage solution (PEG) with ascorbic acid (PEG-Asc method) against the conventional PEG-alone solution (PEG-ELS method), for bowel preparation prior to colonoscopy. We compared the following two methods: PEG-Asc method (255 cases) and PEG-ELS method (237 cases). The PEG-Asc method significantly decreased the duration required for complete bowel clearance compared with the PEG-ELS method (129.7 ± 55.5 min vs. 149.2 ± 61.5 min). Moreover, the volume required for administration was significantly less in the PEG-Asc method compared to that in the PEG-ELS method (1,786 ± 421 ml vs. 1,906 ± 332 ml). The bowel cleaning effect was equal in both groups, and there was no significant difference in the incidence of any side-effects.<BR>Considering the duration for colon cleaning, more patients expressed satisfaction with the PEG-Asc method than the PEG-ELS method. We conclude that the PEG-Asc method is efficient, useful, and places less burden on the patient in preparation for colonoscopy.
