- Estimation of Organ or Tissue Dose and the Effective Dose of Patient by Dental Cone Beam X-ray Computed Tomography

This study estimated the effective dose for dental X-ray computed tomography using Alphard-3030 device from the Asahi Roentgen Ind. Co., Ltd., which allows a wide range scans and a past localized domain scan. Alphard-3030 can perform scans in Dental (D), Implant (I), Panorama (P) and the Cephalo (C) mode. Organ and tissue doses were measured in each of modes, and using the tissue was estimated weighting factor of the ICRP2007 recommendation, the effective dose.<BR>The measuremant assembly used UD-170A (BeO) and UD-110S (CaSO4: Tm) thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD) from Panasonic. The calibration of these TLD used a MixDp phantom in the X-ray apparatus YXLON International KK, and irradiated it simulationly with an ionization chamber type associate standard dosimeter from Natl. Inst. of Radiological Sci. and confimation was obtained by comparison. The effective energy was assumed 35.1keV for Alphard-3030 which measured in advance. The Rand woman phantom (Alderson Co.) was used as the phantom for dosimetry. The measured area were brain, thyroid gland, lungs, oesophagus, stomach, large intestine upper part, colon, small intestine, liver, pancreas, spleen, adrenal, kidney, bladder, thymus, breast, ovary, testiculus, red bone marrow, and skin,salivary gland (parotid gland, submandibular gland, sublingual gland) and lens. TLD were arranged over the whole organ to obtain a mean dose as the organ dose. The calculation of the effective dose used tissue-weighting factors for organs and tissues as described in the ICRP recommendation based on the equivalent dose that we measured in 2007. The dose of the remaining tissue and organ of 14 is these average dose as tissue of thymus, adrenal gland, spleen, pancreas, uterus, small intestine.<BR>The effective doses of Alphard-3030 were 197, 219 and 114 μSv in the C, P, the I mode, respectively. In upper central incisor, lower left first molar and left temporomandibular joint region in D mode, the effective doses 24.4, 72.5 and 23.9 μSv, respectively.
