Validity of combining triaxial accelerometry and heart rate in the assessment of the dynamics of energy expenditure during walking

The assessment of the energy expenditure (EE) in daily life is considered to be important in obesity prevention and health management. The EE has been quantified using accelerometry by METs base, but this method is unable to determine EE dynamics due to the lack of temporal resolution. In this study, we propose a method to predict dynamics of EE during walking from the amplitude of a 3D vector of accelerometer (A3D) and heart rate (HR) by using transfer function estimates (TFs). The autoregressive with exogenous input model method was used for calculating TFs. The dynamics of EE was predicted by convolving the impulse responses with A3D and instantaneous HR. When applying individual TFs, the EE dynamics was slightly underestimated with the error of -7.3% on average. Combined A3D with HR estimates were more accurate than estimates from A3D alone.
