Total artificial heart (TAH) solves problems of lack of donors and not to apply heart transplant patients. We developed helical flow pump (HFP) for TAH. HFP have hydrodynamic bearing and run pulsatile flow to prevent sucking. Now, satisfactory pump was developed for left pump, however, there was problem for right pump that hydrodynamic bearing didn't work on low number of revolution at diastole. The purpose of this study was to improve right pump so that hydrodynamic bearing functions well in pulmonary circulation and to investigate in vitro and vivo. Right pump impeller was smaller than before. Simultaneously volute shape was changed accordingly. Results of the pressure flow curves using this impeller, flow rate became broadening at head 20 mmHg. Next, the right pump was tested as part of TAH using goat, and recorded the survival of 166 hours. This right pump could eject sufficient pulsatile flow by pulmonary circulation conditions.
