On the Transmissibility of Visible Light through a Cloud of Particles

抄録

This paper is a continuation of our previous comma on the aume subject. It is a report of an exper mental shyly on ekowlar obiineol from ineeiwe awl four sobsianeee which are used in military smokescreen.. They have tano maximum points in the transmiseibifity-wave-length diagram, which is perhaps due to the complex nature of the wrmbwetion products of the samples. Some discussions on the inappliabilfty of Rayleigh's scattering formula to oar problem ace also wmtainerl in thin paper. The inapplicahility of the formula seemed wmrlusive fnan oar study.<br>Colour obervatlons of the filament were compared with our experiments. The results seem uwlersinwlable from the qualitative standpoint The radii of the oluard partlebs were deduced by observing the velocities id settling id the cloud and by assuming the densities to he equal to that of water. By wanparing the radius of the particles thus measured we fowl that the poison of the second maximum tranmiasibilities for each aloud have no definite relation to the sedans, whieh is why we took ar count of the nature of the surfaees of the particles to explain this pnrblem The first maximum point seems to shift to the long wave-length side as the radius of the particles increasard. The amount of the shifting was deluced to be 800Å with an Increase of 10-4am. in the radius. The position of the maximum point for the eloud of water particles of radius 20×10-4cm. was anticipated to be about 5900Å.
