抄録
First of all, I would like to express my hearthul thanks to Chairman Neer for having given me the honor of being a Codman Lecturer and also for having contributed greatly to the development Japanese shoulder society ever since its inauguration.<BR>Dr. Ernest Amory Codman (1869-1940) has been respected as the father of surgery of the shoulder joint. His work entitled “The Shoulder” has been the bible of the science of shoulder for numerous investigators throughout the world. He is not only famous for his works on the shoulder but also for his great achievements in the study of bone tumors. He discovered what is known as the Codman triangle, which is used for the radiologic diagnosis of osteosarcomas. He was the first to set up the Registry of Bone Sarcoma. In the section on “frozen shoulder” he stases: “This is a class of cases I find difficult to define, difficuit to treat and difficult to explain from the point of view of pathology. The typical case is one of frozen shoulder which shows no calcified deposit and in which a history of trauma is absent. They run a self-limited course and clrear up entirely without leaving the joint deformed or otherwise permanently damaged.”
