- Suspended sediment transports after strip thinning: Monitoring of runoff and analysis of radiocesium concentration
抄録
To examine the effects of forest thinning on suspended sediment (SS) transports within catchments, we monitored catchment runoff (K2: 17.1 ha, K3: 8.9 ha) and measured radiocesium activity of SS. Strip thinning (50% by stand density) for commercial timber was conducted in K2 with skid trail installation, while K3 was remained as a reference. Mean amount of SS in the K2 was four times greater than that in the K3, while Cs-134 activity was 328 Bq kg-1 (SD = 109) and 516 Bq kg-1 (SD =71), respectively. These results indicated the amount of SS can be increased due to strip thinning. The SS on skid trails (mean of Cs-134 activity = 119 Bq kg-1; SD = 40) may be mixed in the SS of the K2, the resultant in lower Cs-134 activity. Our finding suggests the SS can be transported from hillslopes to stream-channels via skid trails.
