Detection of low density natural forest in the Andes region using LANDSAT 8 imagery

Due to a long history of exploitation for fuel-wood and construction of households, the remaining natural forests in the Andes region of South-America are relict tree populations in inaccessible areas, most of them showing low density of individuals. For better monitoring and management, the detection of these kind of forests by remote sensing techniques should be studied. The forest stand density data was analyzed to check the possibility of their detection by Landsat 8 medium resolution imagery using the mean spectral reflectance of objects obtained via satellite image segmentation. The study area in this research is the department of Cuzco, in Peru. Finally, the spatial distribution of low density forests as detected by Landsat image data is presented.
