This paper reports the current waste production by Ulaanbaatar. Characterization of household waste and coal ash was performed and potential hazardousness of coal ash disposal was discussed. In Mongolia, 1.35 million tons of household waste was generated and the waste generation rate was 1.21 kg/per/day in 2015. Food waste or kitchen scrap is approximately 43% to 78% in ger and apartment households, respectively. The main components of all ash samples were SiO2, SO3, CaO, Al2O3 and Fe2O3. Leaching test and content analysis were performed. The concentration and leachability of As in ash from power plant exceed the standard values of Japanese soil contamination. The concentration of Se from the leaching test of household coal ash exceed the standard values of Japanese soil contamination. Because the three landfill sites are not equipped with leachate control system, there is great concern that the groundwater contamination by hazardous elements such as Se. Although the coal ash generated from the power plants was stored at the plants, recycling of coal ash technology using environmentally friendly method is highly demanded in future.
