The purpose of this research is to design a new class of olefin polymerization catalysts using soluble polynorbornene (PNB) chain as the carrier. For the said design, we have adopted two strategies: (i) Firstly, side chain functionalised soluble polymer supports have been synthesized via Grubbs catalysed ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The resultant polymers have been used to support half-metallocene catalysts. (ii) Secondly, we have synthesized norbornene derivative containing aryloxide pendant group, which is coordinated to half-metallocene catalyst. The metal containing norbornene derivative has been copolymerized with norbornene via Grubbs catalysed ROMP in order to fulfil the catalyst design. The synthesized catalysts have been employed in ethylene polymerization.
