Distribution of Fukushima-derived radiocesium in Forest floor

Since the Fukushima nuclear reactor accident (11 March 2011), the temporal evolution of radiocesium in coniferous forest floor is being investigated in Tochigi prefecture. Radiocesium activities in forest floor which is composed of undergrowth vegetation (UG), litter layer (Ol) and fermented layer (Of) were determined by gamma ray spectrometry. The radiocesium content in the UG components showed high variation over time, possibly due to dynamics of the plant’s growth. The slight variation in the general decreasing pattern in Ol-layers was might be partly due to decomposition process and partly due to less contaminated litter fall in the later period of time. Radiocesium showed steady increase and tends to stay longer in Of-horizon, implying it is an important spot for forest radio-ecological management.
