Abstract

In this study, the phase separation of a uniform mixture composed of poly(ethyl methacrylate) (PEMA) and poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) was induced by photopolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer used as a co-solvent. Phase separation of the ternary mixture was initiated by irradiation with 405 nm visible light that triggers the polymerization of MMA. To image the morphology of the ternary systems, the two polymers PEA and PEMA were labeled with fluorescein and rhodamine-B, respectively. The phase separation kinetics was in situ monitored by using the multi-tracking techniques under a laser-scanning confocal microscope [LSCM]. It was found that a PEMA-rich phase first separated from the mixture and subsequently, the PEA-rich component segregated and enwrapped the PEMA-rich phase in the PMMA matrix of the ternary blend. The correlation among polymerization yield, the molecular weight of the resulting PMMA and the onset of phase separation of the two components PEA and PEMA from the ternary mixture are also discussed in terms of Hildebrand solubility parameters.
