This paper describes the determination of total cyanide in water by continuous flow analysis (CFA method) after the distillation of the continuous flow sample at pH 2 or less at 145°C, and compares the results with those of the JIS K 0102 method. The distillation reagents were potassium dihydrogen phosphate, phosphoric acid, potassium chloride, and glycerin solution. Four samples such as pure water, steel effluent, sewage effluent, and soil eluate containing KCN, NH4SCN, K2Zn(CN)4, K2Cu(CN)3, K4Fe(CN)6, K3Fe(CN)6, Na2Fe(CN)5(NO), and K3Co(CN)6 as CN 0.1 mg L−1 and 1.0 mg L−1 were used. While the total cyanide content was almost completely recovered from KCN, K2Zn(CN)4, K2Cu(CN)3, K4Fe(CN)6, K3Fe(CN)6, and Na2Fe(CN)5(NO) by the CFA method, almost no cyanide could be recovered from NH4SCN and K3Co(CN)6. Moreover, approximately the same results were obtained in the recovery tests of total cyanide by the CFA and JIS K 0102 methods. Thus, the CFA method could be successfully applied for the continuous determination of total cyanide in water and wastewater. The proposed CFA method can continuously analyze 20 samples in one hour.
