Abstract

In this study, we first examined the manner in which Bunpitsu-Katsudoho, an educational method that encourages writing as part of subject studies, has been practiced in Japanese schools. By comparing the findings with the action policies of the Japanese Writing Association, we examined the underlying challenges and the reasons influencing how “Bunpitsu-Katsudoho” failed to become a household term. For this purpose, we examined Sakubun To KyoikuEssay Writing and Education), a journal published by the Japanese Writing Association, and MichiPassage), a newsletter issued by Myojo Gakuen PTA. Although the results illuminate the success of practices adopted under the action policies and prove the educational significance of writing activities as part of subject studies, they also reveal the challenges arising for Bunpitsu-Katsudoho from a failure to dispel the perception that this practice is, unlike Seikatsu-Tsuzurikata (a Japanese writing project, making children face actual life circumstances and write about them so that they can recognize the real world and fight it), only a secondary effort to be covered in subject studies.
