Hydrogen exhausted from atmosphere heat-treating furnace has the potential for fuel cells. However, exhausted hydrogen contains carbon monoxide (CO) that has a bad effect on Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cell (PEFC) performance, referred as CO poisoning. Therefore, in this study, the effect of CO-contained hydrogen fuels on PEFC stack performance has been evaluated. On the constant voltage operation under presence of CO, stack current decreased. The current decrease rate at the beginning of the CO supply with each CO concentration does not differ much, however, large difference was observed after the time elapsed. In addition, it seems that the degree of performance degradation depends on total amount of CO input. After switching to pure hydrogen feed, the current recovered at a rate of 2.1-2.8 mA/min. Since these recovery speeds are much smaller than the current decrease rate, it seems that the delay of desorption is dominant in the influence of CO. Therefore, it is suggested that improvement of recovery behavior according to CO supply amount is required for using CO-contained hydrogen fuel.
