<p>Light-driven deformation of PNIPAM hydrogel fibers was induced using plasmonic photo-thermal conversion. Plasmonic silver nanoparticles were precipitated inside PNIPAM hydrogels through photo-reductive reactions of silver ion. Such nanoparticles exhibited intense absorption bands around 420 nm in wavelength, which could be assigned to be localized plasmonic absorption. The absorption markedly increased with UV irradiation does. When laser light of 450 nm wavelength was focused into gel fibers with silver nanoparticles in water, noticeable shrinkages occurred around irradiated region. The gel fibers were gradually recovered to the original shapes once the irradiation was turned off. These results mean that plasmonic nanoparticles inside gels could work as effective energy converters for deformation in soft micro actuators.</p>
