Employing a chirped-pulse-oscillator scheme, we have demonstrated a passively mode-locked Yb:Y3Al5O12 (Yb:YAG) bulk laser that delivers a total pulse energy of 2.07 μJ. The thermal lens effect of the Yb:YAG crystal was measured under lasing and non-lasing conditions. A maximum continuous-wave output power of 32.0 W was obtained with a high conversion efficiency of 68.4%. An 8.2-MHz low-repetition-rate mode-locked laser was designed using a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) and a multiple-pass cavity (MPC). It generated chirped 2.04-ps pulses that could be potentially dechirped to a pulse duration of 1.0 ps.
