<jats:p>We propose the separation of <jats:italic>Onslowia</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Verosphacella</jats:italic> from the Choristocarpaceae and from the Sphacelariales based on comparisons of DNA sequences of <jats:italic>rbc</jats:italic>L and nrRNA genes and morphological considerations. The new family Onslowiaceae is created to include these two genera. The families Choristocarpaceae and Onslowiaceae are considered <jats:italic>incertae sedis.</jats:italic></jats:p>
