Ion Density Measurements with a Hollow Probe

In order to measure the number density of charged particles in a high speed flow of slightly ionized argon, a hollow electric collector probe was fabricated. It was found that the application of a strong magnetic field was useful to collect almost all the charged particles entering the probe with a large electric field. The probe was used to obtain ion density profiles behind shock waves with Mach numbers from 6.0 to 8.5 with the initial pressures of 2.0 and 4.0 mmHg. The ion densities measured were in the range from 1011 to 1013 cm−3. The experimental results were compared with the electron densities measured by microwave techniques. The equilibrium ion densities were in good agreement with those measured by the microwave probe.
