We compared three different measuring methods for evaluating the percentage of bodyfat (BF%), underwater weighing (UWW), skinfold thickness (SFT) and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). The study subjects were 249 healthy young Japanese women aged 19-21 years. The mean BF% values by SFT were significantly lower than those by the other methods (p<0.05). The number of subjects judged as obese were 50, 30 and 48 from the criterion of a BF% value equal to or greater than 30% by UWW, SFT and BIA, respectively. We also analyzed the frequency of obesity by the chi-square test. These results suggest that a common cutoff value of 30% for judging obesity would result in a different evaluation by SFT. The numbers of obese subjects for whom the UWW evaluation agreed with that by SFT and BIA were 19 and 26, respectively. We propose that the cutoff value for judging obesity should be considered according to the measuring method.
