Anterior lobes of the pituitary of laying White Leghorn hens were excised at various times during the period between ovulations of the initial ovum and the second ovum (C2) of a clutch, and divided into cephalic and caudal lobes. The lobes were assayed for FSH by the use of an homologous radioimmunoassay, and for LH by the use of the method based on the in vitro release of testosterone from the isolated testicular cells of the quail. The FSH concentration and content in the cephalic lobe showed a peak 21 and 11h before ovulation(C2), while in the caudal lobe a peak was apparent only at 8h. Similar changes were also observed in the LH concentration and content in the two lobes, but the time of the second peak in the cephalic lobe was 8h before ovulation (C2) (3h later than the FSH peak). The results suggest a possibility that the secretion of FSH and LH from the two lobes of the anterior pituitary of the hen during the ovulatory cycle is controlled by a different mechanism.
