Abstract
Among the scroll paintings in chusei (the middle ages), Hyakkiyagyoemaki is especially outstanding for its strange choice of subject matter. This scroll painting also provokes the question: what is its theme? But this question itself seems to have sprung from the tendency to discuss the most well-known Daitokuji-Shinjuan-bon alone, to substitute its analysis for that of the entire aspects of Hyakkiyagyoemaki. In order to comprehend the process of formation and theme of Hyakkiyagyoemaki, one would have to turn to its variations and underground versions … ikon and betsubon … which have a different design from that of Shinjuan-bon. Along with this, I hope to inquire into the relation of these books with Tsukumokamiki.
