Decomposed granite soils are generally called Masa-do and are widely distributed in the south-western part of Japan. Specifically, around Hiroshima, the residual soil in decomposed granite soils of the Hiroshima type extends from 10 to 50 metres under the surface. Therefore,it affects earthwork in this area. This gives rise to many accidents for the reason that safety is lost due to the unclear course of water seepage causing effluences of the earth and alterations of the ground. This paper reports on laboratory work using a rectangular section of compacted decomposed granite soils as a model for the seepage ground. The resulting figures on water levels, moisture content and strain meter readings are considered and the characteristics of seepage by the relaxantion method are examined, showing the factors involved in destructive seepage effects.
