Novel liquid crystalline conducting polymers with photo-responsible function were synthesized by introducing an azobenzene moiety as a mesogenic core into side chain. Polymerizations of the liquid crystal-substituted acetylene monomer were carried out using a Rh-based or Fe-based catalyst. Observation of optical polarizing microscope demonstrated that the monomer exhibits a droplets texture characteristic of nematic phase, and the polymer a polygonal texture assignable to smectic phase. Reversible photochemical cis-trans isomerization of the azobenzene moiety as well as irreversible thermal isomerization from cis to trans form of the polymer backbone were elucidated.
