Abstract

The purpose of this study is to determine the level of physical fitness among varsity students atTokyo Medical and Dental University. The subjects were male and female students in 2003 and 2004. The obtained results were statistically analyzed; they were then compared with Japanese governmentdata on ordinary Japanese males and females. The results can be summarized as follows: 1) The results of the physical fitness test (side step, standing jump and handball throw) of malefreshmen from T.M.D.U. in 2004 were significantly inferior to those of ordinary males of the same age(p<.001). 2) The results of the aerobic fitness test (20m shuttle run) of female freshmen from T.M.D.U. in 2004were significantly inferior to those of ordinary females of the same age (p<.001).And it was foundthat the grip strengths of female freshmen at T.M.D.U. in 2004 were significantly inferior to those ofordinary females of the same age (p<.05). 3) Among both male and female subjects in 2004, results obtained from the skin-fold thickness testshowed no tendency toward obesity. 4) Among both male and female subjects in 2003, it was found that the physical fitness test scores (backstrength, grip strength and step test) in November were significantly superior to those of the samesubjects in April (p<.001). 5) Among both male and female subjects in 2004, it was found that grip strengths in October weresignificantly superior to those of the same subjects in April (p<.001). 6) Among male subjects in 2004, it was found that sit-up scores in October were significantly superior tothose of the same subjects in April (p<.05). These results suggest that provision of a reasonable and effective physical fitness program isimportant for students at T.M.D.U.
