Abstract

Surveys of bats were conducted in windbreak forests located in agricultural areas in Nakasatsunai Village, Hokkaido, during the summers of 2002 to 2004. Using mist nets, we captured five species of bats : Myotis macrodactylus, Myotis daubentonii, Myotis gracilis, Myotis frater, and Plecotus auritus. One night we captured as many as 51 bats of the first four species (excluding P. auritus) within a short period at one location. As we did not see any foraging bats, we concluded that many of the bat species used the windbreak forests as their traveling paths. We obtained the following information about the breeding seasons of Myotis daubentonii and Myotis gracilis, which we captured in relatively large numbers during the investigation : The birth period of Myotis daubentonii began in early July and the nursing period lasted from early or mid-July to early August. Yearlings born early in the season stopped feeding from their mothers in late July, when they began to fly by themselves. The nursing period of Myotis gracilis lasted at least from late July to early August, and the yearlings began flying by themselves from late July.
